Tips on Cooling Down Your Garage in the Summer

As summer bounces in, it's time to brace ourselves for rising temperatures and extreme heat and humidity. It's going to get mighty uncomfortable and if your garage isn't optimized for the heat, you can count on feeling as if you're being baked alive (think 110 degrees and above). If you're planning to spend some quality time doing your personal projects and/or repairs, you'll want to explore cooling solutions to make the time you spend in there more tolerable. Here are some ideas on how you can cool down your garage in the summer.

Work with the garage door open. It's the easiest and cheapest solution - keep your garage door open while you're inside.

Install insulation. Many homeowners neglect to insulate their garage, making it the single largest non-insulated space the home. Did you know that insulation is actually an energy saving solution? Proper insulation will help to drastically bring down your electric bill. It will keep your garage warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. If you haven't insulated your garage yet, consider doing this as a first step. If you haven't had your insulation checked for some time, now is the time to do it. Think about insulating your walls, your roof, and your garage door as well.

Install a ceiling or attic fan. This kind of fan operates by drawing hot air from inside the garage and exhausting or blowing it back outwards. The fan should be situated near the ceiling or higher than 4 feet above the floor. This will involve creating an opening on the wall of your garage, and you'll need a nearby electric outlet to plug the fan in.

Bring in an electric fan or evaporative cooler. You can put in a stand fan inside the garage. This will help to blow air towards you, but if the garage door isn't open it won't remove the hot air from the room; it will just blow it around. An evaporative cooler is a low cost alternative to an air conditioning unit. You put ice or water inside the unit and the machine blows cool air from the ice/water. Remember, though, that this may not be an entirely ideal solution - since you're blowing moist air it may cause rusting on your equipment and gadgets.

Consider putting in a whole house fan. If it's the entire house and not just your garage that's suffering from the heat, a whole house fan - the kind with the insulated duct that runs across the inside of your ceiling - is a great idea. You may need more than one fan depending on how many square foot of space you want to cover.

Install an air conditioning unit. If your garage is in the path of the afternoon sun and becomes really hot in the summer, an air conditioning unit may be your best solution. A/C units can cover bigger spaces and because they operate through Freon, they provide the coolest air.

De-clutter. When there are too many things in a room, there is less space for the air to circulate in. If you've been making your garage a store room, consider doing a thorough cleaning and get rid of stuff that you hardly use, aren't likely to use anymore, or that you don't need. Organize things neatly on shelves. If your garage doesn't have enough shelf space, consider installing shelves and/or cabinets. Storage space with doors will look neater and when the doors are closed there will be less crevices for the air to circulate in. The more free space there is, the better.

Don't park a hot car inside immediately. If you've been out in your car and are now coming home, park your car on the driveway for an hour or two to let it cool down before bringing it inside the garage. The metal parts of the car will radiate heat and add to the blistering heat inside.

There are many solutions for cooling down a garage. Study the differences in cost in order to find one that won't kill your budget. Remember to consult a garage specialist too to make sure that you're making the right choices.

Refrigerator's Air Circulation and Humidity

The refrigerator relies on forced air to transfer heat. Fans inside the appliance move air around. The faster the air flows, the more quickly the heat is removed. For this reason, you don't want to do anything to block the airflow. There are three basic types of forced-air systems in refrigerators. In ceiling-type refrigeration,
a single fan is mounted on the ceiling of the appliance. This is adequate for small-volume interiors but is not used in larger refrigerators. Because it only has a single location, it might allow for hot spots in the corners of the interior cabinet. In back-wall or mullion-type refrigeration, the airflow system takes in air above the top shelf and discharges it below the bottom shelf.

The duct-type refrigeration system is a combination of the first two types. Here, the forced-air unit is located at or above ceiling level, and the air is circulated through a series of small air ducts vented to various spots on the back wall of the cabinet. Just how important is air circulation? Well, the difference between safe and unsafe raw foods can be as little as five to seven degrees Fahrenheit. Seafood, poultry, or red meats will spoil within 18 to 24 hours if their refrigerated temperature rises above 42 to 45 degrees
Fahrenheit, and you already know the HACCP guideline of temperatures no higher than 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Would you rather risk a lawsuit and the resulting negative publicity from food-poisoning allegations, or keep your refrigerator air circulating properly?

Humidity is the amount of moisture (or water vapor) in the air. At different temperatures, air can hold different amounts of water. In refrigeration, the type of humidity we are interested in is the relative humidity, or how much of its maximum water-holding capacity the air contains at any given time, expressed as a percentage. For example, 85 percent humidity indicates that the air is holding 85 percent as much water as it could hold at that temperature. Relative humidity greatly affects the appearance and rate of deterioration of many foods. If the air surrounding the stored foods has a very low relative humidity, for instance, the air naturally picks up moisture from the foods themselves, causing surface discoloration, cracking, and drying.

If the air has a high relative humidity, some of the moisture will condense on food that is supposed to be kept dry, causing it to soften or grow mold or bacteria. Fortunately, most foods do well in a relative humidity of 80 to 85 percent. To achieve this optimum level, manufacturers are concerned that the refrigerator's evaporator coils be large enough to operate at a temperature a few degrees lower than the desired temperature of the appliance. This differential reduces the amount of moisture that accumulates on the evaporator coils and keeps the moisture in the cabinet of the refrigerator instead. If the coils' temperature becomes too low, however, the moisture will turn to ice crystals and get stuck on
the coils.

In this case, airflow through the system is blocked and the moisture in the refrigerated space is depleted. As you can see, getting all the factors right is a delicate balance, with your food costs and food quality at stake. In short, it is difficult to keep frost off the coils but necessary to keep them frost-free so they will operate properly. Adding heat to the area, to defrost the coils, can compromise the temperature of the food inside. A fairly new concept from Hussman Modular Defrost of Bridgeton, Missouri, does just what its name indicates: defrosts the coil in sections. The automated system defrosts coils at no more than nine minutes per section, and never defrosts adjacent sections at the same time, all programmed by an electronic controller capable of running up to six walk-ins.

The idea works for walk-in and reach-in refrigerators but not freezers. It maintains food quality and saves energy by keeping the compressors from working overtime to compensate for frozen coils. Another humidity-control suggestion for inside refrigerated space was pioneered by Humitech International Group, Inc. of Dallas, Texas. Humitech uses a mineral product called sorbite to absorb moisture and odors.

We mentioned most foods do well at 80 to 85 percent relative humidity, but fresh fruits and vegetables are exceptions. They require more humidity, up to 95 percent. To increase moisture content, you can slow down the air circulation. This explains why there are separate, closed produce bins in most refrigerators-to hold in natural moisture from the vegetables and to restrict airflow.

Freezers maintain an average relative humidity of only 30 to 35 percent. Any more moisture would automatically raise the temperature because it would hit the coils, freeze in place, and block the airflow, causing the freezer air to become warmer. The low humidity of freezers requires special food storage precautions. Use moisture- and vapor-proof wrapping to prevent the surface damage we know as "freezer burn" from occurring if any moisture condenses on the food.

Storage Rooms For Flammable Chemicals

An inside storage room permits the storage of larger quantities of flammable and combustible liquids. However, there are specific requirements for its design and construction that must be followed to protect not only the workers but the general public and the environment.

A storage room for flammable chemicals must be constructed to meet the required fire-resistance rating for its use. It must comply with the following test specifications outlined in the National Fire Prevention Association Standard Methods of Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials, NFPA 251-1969:

It is recommended that a storage room for flammable liquids be located along an exterior wall because of the danger of explosion. A fire protection system for an inside storage room is a sprinkler system, water spray, carbon dioxide or other system that has been approved by local fire authorities. If an automatic sprinkler system is present, it must be designed and installed according to code. The maximum allowable size for a storage room inside a building is 500 square feet. Openings to other rooms or buildings must be provided with non-combustible, liquid-tight, raised sills or ramps, at least 4 inches below the surrounding floor. Approved self-closing fire doors must be used. The room must be liquid-tight where walls join the floor. An open-grated trench inside the room which drains to a safe place might be an acceptable alternative to the sill or ramp. If a lot of flammable liquids are transferred in and out of the room using hand trucks, this might be preferable. Windows in other exposed properties or exposed portions of the building must be protected as outlined in NFPA Standard for Fire Doors and Windows. Electrical Wiring and equipment located in an inside storage room used for Class I liquids must be approved under Subpart S, Electrical, for Class I, Division 2 Hazardous Locations. If storing only Class II and Class III, electrical wiring shall be approved for general use. An approved ventilation system must be installed.

Since flammable vapors are heavier than air, they hang low to the floor and can accumulate and move toward sources of ignition or other non-compatible chemicals. The ventilation system is vital in preventing flammable vapors from accumulating enough to cause an explosion or liquid fire. Every inside storage room must have either a gravity or mechanical exhausting system which provides a complete change of air within the room at least 6 times an hour. The switch for a mechanical venting system also controls all room lighting and must be located outside the storage room. If gravity venting is provided, the fresh air intake and the exhaust outlet from the room must be on the exterior of the building in which the storage room is located.

Additional Requirements:

Inside every storage room, an aisle at least 3 feet wide must be maintained, allowing for easy movement in the room. This is necessary to reduce the potential for spilling or damaging containers and to provide access for firefighting and a ready escape path from the room if a fire occurs. If wood is used for shelves, it must be at least 1 inch thick and it may also be used for racks, dunnage, scuffboards, floor overlay, etc.. Chemicals are not to be stored on unfinished wooden shelves. Finished metal or high density plastic (polypropylene) is recommended shelving for most chemicals. If wood is used, it must be sealed with a good grade oil based paint, natural or synthetic varnish. Proper segregation of chemicals must be maintained inside the storage room. Incompatible chemicals must be stored at a distance from each other or possible in partitioned areas. Chemicals should be stored at eye level to decrease chance of spilling or breakage and for ease of identification. Labels must be complete, legible and up to date. MSDS information must be available for all chemicals stored. At least 1 portable fire extinguisher with a rating of not less than 12-B units must be located outside the storage room, no more than 10 feet from the door opening into the room. Materials which react with water shall not be stored in the same room with flammable or combustible liquids. Containers over 30 gallons capacity must not be stacked on top of others.

Dispensing of chemicals is by an approved pump or self-closing faucet, or closed piping system. If flammable liquids are dispensed inside the storage room, a pilot light must be installed adjacent to the switch.

Storage Capacity

This depends upon the availability of a sprinkling system and the fire rating of the storage room. One with a fire rating of 2 hours and equipped with sprinklers is allowed to store a greater quantity of chemicals. If fire protection is present in a room that has a 2 hours fire resistance rating, storage allowed is 10 gallons per square foot. If there is no fire protection in this room, 4 gallons of chemicals per square foot is allowed. In a room that has a Fire Resistance Rating of 1 hour, with fire protection, the storage space is decreased to 150 square feet. The amount of flammable chemicals that can be kept in this room is 5 gallons per square foot. A room that has no fire protection and a fire resistance rating of 1 hour can store 2 gallons of flammable chemicals per square foot.
